Tom FreemanParticipant
Really interesting stuff, and a different tone than what I’m used to reading about oil testing on BITOG.
That guy needs an editor. The aforementioned wacky capitalization, oddball formatting, and other strangeness makes it tough to read his content. He also likely needs a very large room to keep his ego. Any time someone does that much chest beating about how right they are, I’m a bit skeptical.
I will say that there does appear to be lots of real-appearing data. I’m fascinated by the fact that he threw in the test results of numerous oils with third party additive packages. After reading tons of articles about how products like “Slick 50” and “Z-Max” are snake oil, I had written off pretty much all oil additives. I guess I’ll have to do a bit more research on some of the products on the market now.
FWIW, I do care about motor oil, as I’d like the original S52 in my M3 to last for a while. It has 158K, and I drive it like I stole it almost every time I get in the car (after the oil gets up to temp, of course).
I’m running Liqui Moly RaceTech GT1 10W-60 based off of the recommendation of the car’s previous owner (Adrian Radu). Yeah, I know…that’s S54 oil, but I’ve read some good things about using it in S52s that are driven hard. I’m hoping it is my “ounce of prevention.”
Tom FreemanParticipantJeff – thanks much for the efforts, gnashing of teeth, and other pain and suffering to get a new system like this online. I’ve been through T&S system changes with other clubs in the past, and it’s never just plug and play. Considering that 100 drivers got 6 runs on a 40+ second course, even with some growing pains…that’s impressive.
Tom FreemanParticipantFun course, excellent use of the available real-estate. The slowest parts of the course separated the truly fast drivers from the rest of us. You could artfully carve the lane changes and the sweepers, but completely blow the run by plowing wide in the tight sections. I would have killed for some more front grip in the tight stuff…but in reality, I should have gotten on the brakes earlier and stayed tight to the cones in the slow stuff. As always, fix the driver first, then work on the car.
Tom FreemanParticipantThanks for a fun event and lots of runs to knock the rust off. I hadn’t dodged cones since 2012, but after a few runs it started to feel pretty natural again. I was happy with my times, but my tires were fairly awful, as Ryan Rich found out in his significantly sideways expedition in my car (Black e36, #551).
Thanks to everyone who came up and talked to the new guy (Gary, Bob, Phil, Grant, Alex, Tim, et. al.). I hope to run with you guys again soon!
Thanks,
Tom FreemanTom FreemanParticipantI snagged a room at the Laguna Lodge for Friday night. It’s only one bed, but I’ll happily take a roommate if you provide an air mattress.
Looking forward to taking a couple 32nds off of my tires!
