In among the madness that is GGC autocross, I’d just like to say a heartfelt ‘Congratulations’ to Gurinder on his second place finish in ‘A’ and best result this season. Well deserved mate…! You’re a wild man…. 🙂

Nigel MottParticipantHi Teddy. Thanks for the feedback. I was hoping that we would get some perspective from the students. I think each student got around 25 runs, which is equivalent to 4 normal GGC autocross events. That is a lot of seat time!
I pinged Jeff regarding photos about a week ago and there were around 20+ that were taken by the photographer you mention. I’ll ask Jeff to post the link to this thread. I might also suggest that you take a read of the October edition of the ‘eBombe’ when it comes out…. 😉
Nigel MottParticipantHey Ryan. Neat data and awesome job on ‘Snoopys Dream’!
Nigel MottParticipantAhhhhh…. gotcha…. Thanks!
Nigel MottParticipantI’m with Henry. The name implies there is a choice to make, but after 10 minutes of study, I still can’t see it…. Sniff…..
Nigel MottParticipantYou wouldn’t see it often Dave… 🙂
Nigel MottParticipantThe new system is great. I loved seeing a time, every time, both at the Beginners AX and the Test and Tune. The only question I have is what will Brian do with his spare time? 😉
Hey Rafael: Smokey is nicely set up and was a pleasure to drive. Also, in the spirit of disclosure, my best time was Ryan driving Zebedee..!
Nigel MottParticipantVery well said Andy. A tip of the hat to the AX leadership. Nice one chaps.
In my opinion it was a great day for all involved. I believe that we achieved an Evo Phase I teaching experience, with stronger social interaction, at 50% of the cost. I’d call that a result. I can only hope that this event becomes an Annual or bi-Annual fixture on the GGC calendar. Many of the students will pose strong competition in whatever class they run. I also have no doubt that some of them will move on to be instructors at future events.
I hope that we do hear from some of the students, as I’d hate to just be drinking my own Kool-Aid…
Nigel MottParticipantRafael attended their last event at Marina about 6 weeks ago. He said it was a big, open course suited to higher horsepower cars and so a little less technical than our GGC courses. Reasonably well organized, but also a bit more expensive than our events, since the $40 is for the morning or the afternoon, so $80 for the whole day. I think he mentioned that fun runs were an additional $10. Hopefully Rafael sees this and can chime in….
Stuart Calhoon, who runs this event, also organized the Lockheed Martin event that a handful of GGC folks attended a few months ago. As Gurinder says, there’s no such thing as a bad day of Autocross… 🙂
Nigel MottParticipantSo you’re putting the band back together? 🙂
Nigel MottParticipantHi Henry. I have some experience of this as I changed Zebedee’s Differential (E30 Torsen LSD) with an E30 Clutch LSD unit about 18 months ago. I searched on bimmerfoums for E30 Differential rebuilds and found a lot of information. Remember the MCoupe uses the same E30 internals and casing. Only the rear cover is different.
So…..I STRONGLY suggest a visit to the bimmerdiffs.com website. Jonathan Thayer is very well known in MCoupe community and offers parts and ‘how to’ instructions for Differential rebuilds. I purchased new LSD clutch plates (including an extra disc to replace the spacer, which gives you 40% lock vs 25% standard) and all the bearings and seals from him. I don’t have an exact number, but I remember parts being around $450. His prices were competitive relative to other suppliers I found.
I found getting the Differential out to be a slow but relatively straightforward process. On the Z3 you have to drop the subframe to get access to the top mount bolts. Getting the Differential apart was easy. Rebuilding the LSD carrier with new clutches was also easy. Just follow Jonathans rebuild guide. In the spirit of disclosure, I’m a bit spoiled as I have a garage, Kwiklift and workbench and did not have to do this is in the driveway…!
My overall rebuild was more complex, as I changed the ratio on the E30 unit from 3.73 to 3.46. The new ring and pinion gear meant that backlash and pre-load had to be reset. I read up on how to do this, but felt it was beyond me. I paid $300 to the ‘Rear End Shop’ in Santa Rosa to have them do the rebuild (remove old bearings, press new bearings, set tolerances..) There is a ‘Rear End Shop’ in the Bay area as well.
18 months and many events later, I’m really happy with the set-up. Wishing you good luck!
Nigel MottParticipantHi Brian. It looks like you have your work cut out in AA. 🙁 My times (#462 AA) are all correct. I know that sometimes having a row of confirmed good data can help figure out the missing pieces.
Nigel MottParticipantI echo Rafael’s sentiments. My compadres in AA delivered me a beating of epic proportions. I’ve apologized to Zebedee and we’ll have another go in August 🙂 Also, my thanks to Jeff for the opportunity to coach. A different and enjoyable experience.

Nigel MottParticipantGood grief..! Will there be road signs or can we rent GPS from the trailer..?
Nigel MottParticipantSeconded. Thanks Brian! 11.16pm on a public holiday is tremendous dedication…
