Justin TsangParticipantJust let Charlie design a course
Justin TsangParticipant
This is registration for the fast course? :P
😆 😆 😆 😆
Justin TsangParticipantJustin TsangParticipantHow many drops do you get?
Justin TsangParticipantIMO, courses does not have to be tight to be a challenge.
Justin TsangParticipantJust wondering why not make the first 2 cones 50ft apart as well when there are space on the exit of the left hander? 40ft is quite a pinch and no line option
Justin TsangParticipant40 & 50 ft, ouch. minimum spacing for slalom is 45 ft for the SCCA rulebook and generally 55-60ft.
Justin TsangParticipantMakes sense. Thanks!
Justin TsangParticipantFirst, Let me clarify, I never said the course wasn’t tight. “Is anyone arguing against that?” A tight course means slower turns… That’s what I have been saying all along. Slower turns mean better for higher power cars…. Slower turns = tight?
Second, I mentioned 5 90+ degree turns, not 5 shut it down and go corners. 90+ degrees turns still require you to slow the car significantly. We may have interpretation of that.
Third, I am a terrible coach. I only have 3 advices, it doesn’t matter if you are driving 400+hp, 100hp, FWD, RWD, AWD. The same applies.
A. Look ahead
B. Slow in, fast out
C. Smooth inputs (steering/throttle/brake).Lastly, I accept opinions of others. We can agree to disagree. No hard feelings, I am just stating my opinion too, which obviously you disagree. There are much better drivers than me at the last event that share the same opinion as me, but I am the only one that decided to share it here.
Justin TsangParticipant
I would totally believe you if you handily beat your brother with the mazdaspeed, but since you didn’t, well then it’s your opinion.
Really? The slow corners is where the MS3 will beat the E36, these type of courses won’t even be a close match. The flowy and sweeping type course is where the E36 is faster… My point was that a car with more power will be faster on that course.
I don’t know how you guys don’t get this…. Cars with more power/torque (most of the times they go hand in hand) will be faster on courses where you have to shut it down and pick back up multiple times…. You think a car with no power will be faster out of a 20mph turn vs. a car with power? Think about it…. Just because you guys with power couldn’t step on the gas for long isn’t the car’s fault. You have to setup the car for the corner exit, from the video i see, some of you guys are plowing into the corner and by the time you can use the throttle, it’s already way past the apex. You want to be on the throttle before the apex.
Point is… Slower turns = better for powerful cars… Faster turns = better for less powerful/momentum cars
Justin TsangParticipantShortest and straightest exi…. obviously you aren’t plowing straight line thru to the wall by taking a tight turn in. You want the shortest line from the corner exit to the entrance of the next corner.
The car was dynoed at 168hp, I don’t make up my own numbers. I drive a 280hp mazdaspeed 3 powering the wrong wheels with STX level mods just like the e36, I guarantee that car would have been faster on this course.
Bmw181, open diff spins the wheel with the least traction. How are you spinning the one with traction?
Justin TsangParticipantJust because a 90+ degree turn is wide doesn’t mean there are a lot of lines to choose from. In AutoX, the fastest way around these turns will be the shortest and straightest distance, the straights following these turns are usually too short to justify a wide entry like turn 2 at Laguna seca. In these type of turns, having more horsepower makes a huge difference, a m50 at 2500 rpm isn’t going anywhere.
Bmw181, I am not sure how you get power oversteer with an open diff. The spinning wheel is pushing you to the outside of the corner. Maybe you need to control your throttle input? Are you on and off the throttle?
Justin TsangParticipantI would disagree on that this is not a power course, this is a common misconception. There were 5 90+ degree corners that required hard braking and hard acceleration. Those are corners for horsepower cars… High hp cars are better for course that requires them to get up and go from a low speed corner. Courses with less deceleration or acceleration and more speed maintenance are more suitable for lower power cars.
Can I design a course with more speed maintenance? Seems like most courses we get with BMW is a lot of point and shoot.
Justin TsangParticipantWe were in the 47s with 168whp and street tires.
