Dave SparksParticipant
A few people have asked about the camera I’m using now. It’s a Waylens, and it has built-in GPS, IMU, and Bluetooth OBD-II link. You connect the camera to your computer and it produces data displays like this automatically:

Dave SparksParticipantGoogle Photos did a thing:
Dave SparksParticipantDave SparksParticipantGroup 2, I think.
Dave SparksParticipantThanks for the kind words, and thanks to everyone who helped with setup and teardown.
Time for me to start working on September’s course…
Dave
Dave SparksParticipant4 points does seem way off. On paper, they should run pretty similar times in stock configuration.
Dave SparksParticipantShucks! I don’t know how to respond to compliments.
Someone please complain that it was too tight, or too complicated, or wasn’t as good as [insert club name here]’s courses. 😉

Dave SparksParticipant
IMO, courses does not have to be tight to be a challenge.
I guess you’re lucky I didn’t throw in a 25 ft Chicago box. 🙂
Dave SparksParticipant
Just wondering why not make the first 2 cones 50ft apart as well when there are space on the exit of the left hander? 40ft is quite a pinch and no line option
Because it’s supposed to be a challenge.
Dave SparksParticipant
40 & 50 ft, ouch. minimum spacing for slalom is 45 ft for the SCCA rulebook and generally 55-60ft.
It’s only the first gate. You should be able to figure out a way take advantage of that.
We had a 50 ft and a 60 ft slalom at the last event.
Dave SparksParticipant
Am I right in thinking “Technical” is a codeword meaning tight and twisty and good for MINIs? The first gate of the slalom looks very tight, I’m not sure I’ve seen a 20ft one before.
First gate is 40 ft. The others are 50.
The rest of the course is fairly open, with the exception of the chicane in the middle between the two sweepers. This one is all about speed control.
Dave SparksParticipantThe course was fairly tight, but unless I’m mistaken, there weren’t a lot of places where you could plant your right foot. At least in the videos, it seemed like everyone was feathering the throttle coming off most of the corners.
If you have 400 ft/lbs of torque and you can only put 150 of it to the ground, it’s not doing you much good.
Dave SparksParticipantFirst of all, this is the BMW club and not the Miata club. The courses are designed with BMWs in mind, and for that reason, I will always feature at least one straight where you can stretch your legs.
BTW, what matters in autox is torque, not horsepower (unless your engine is severely RPM-limited).
I usually run simulations to help me balance the course for handling vs. torque, but I didn’t do it this time. My intuition says that this course was reasonably balanced. I watched a few videos, and I think the best drivers were spending less than 1/3 of the time at full throttle. If you find a big disparity in time spent at full throttle between the slowest and fastest cars, then you can argue that it’s a course designed for torque. I’m pretty sure this was not the case.
Next month’s course will be all about speed control.
Dave SparksParticipantLooks awesome! Put me down for a Large.
