John KimParticipant
Sounds like I missed a fun day! Let’s see if I survive 2 days of driving and 1 evening of food/wine tasting at Oktoberfest and maybe I can make it out there for the September event.
John KimParticipantI forgot to turn on the camera for my 7th and fastest lap, which was 41.326 but here is my 6th and 2nd fastest lap at 41.821 with Dave Sparks coaching plus Justin & Jason riding in the back. In my first fun run, the timing display didn’t light up. Somebody came out of the trailer to say I did it in the 39.something but I don’t have confirmation (and it wouldn’t count anyway).

John KimParticipantIf we had this AutoX in France, we would be allowed wine with lunch, croissants instead of donuts, cigarettes while driving, and the option to drive topless (men and women). Not sure anyone would actually drive topless with the cool winds and threat of seat belt chafing. But it would be allowed! And volunteers would be prohibited from working more than 37.5 hours per week.
John KimParticipantI had to cancel yesterday boo hoo hoo. But another sudden change in family travel plans means I might still show up to help out and watch, if I can make it there before 9am.
John KimParticipantAwwwwwww…….. Are they regulars in the GGC autoX? PCA? LM? Oh Boston BMW CCA. I’m not sure Jeff would allow such a proposal in our chapter, you know with the alcohol on course. (Maybe it was sparkling cider.)
John KimParticipantJeff, it all sounds very good and thanks for answering my questions! Definitely better to have some scarcity (oversubscribed events) than the opposite. Your autocrosses could be like a luxury brand.
John KimParticipantAwesome job for the AuotX team. I am curious whether we are getting groups of first-timers who are trying to autoX but are frustrated because the events sell out before they can register. Or are the 1st-timers usually signing up early and it’s the procrastinating veterans that end up on the wait list?
My real question is… if we are pretty consistently selling out both the AutoXes and car control clinics (Canyon), is there something we can do to help more first timer club members get into driving activities?
John KimParticipantYou know you are my first choice for AutoX! Looking at my Motorsportreg account, I see I autocrossed with you in June, July, October and November 2010, though I don’t think I actually showed up for the October event. Came back in August 2011, and those were all while living in Orange County!
Besides, we always knew Spring Mountain in July was a longshot, right?
John KimParticipantWhat you had fun runs on June 15th? I don’t remember any fun runs in April or May. Maybe the trick is to will other people to leave early with the Jedi mind trick.
Jeff told me Tuesday to register now because it was going to sell out, even though I planned to go to Spring Mountain that weekend. Well the SMMR driving school just got canceled, so AutoX it is!

John KimParticipantWow, seeing all the results makes me feel even slower. Something in the 51.x range would have made me pretty happy (as opposed to 53.55).
John KimParticipantBTW, dacat, thanks for coaching me Saturday. Just figured out you were dacat. Though I thought your M3 was silver-grey (silbergrau).
So maybe the momentum car drivers were frustrated because they couldn’t carry speed around the tight turns and the high-HP drivers were frustrated because they couldn’t keep their right feet planted for long after exiting those tight turns.
This theory that lets you all be right–the high HP cars had an advantage accelerating out of tight turns but they weren’t happy because they were using a lower % of their available torque than the low-HP cars!
John KimParticipantI don’t think my car qualifies as high horsepower (200 RWHP) but I did miss having faster sections. Part of that is because I’m all right at driving the edge of traction in big sweepers but not so skilled at tight turns. Usually I plow into them at high speed with front tires sliding then wobble out, trying to get RPMs above 3000 to get some torque. Or I go through them too slowly because I’m afraid of plowing the front.
Anyway Saturday’s course was good practice for me. Need to work on those tight turns.
I have an open diff and it is definitely possible to get power-on oversteer in my car. It’s not very common, and sometimes takes some extra work such as a sudden weight shift or kicking the clutch, but it can happen.
John KimParticipantHere’s my excuse for being slow — I’m slow!
I’m going to pretend I didn’t see all those times in the 47s range until I can break 51 seconds on this type of course.
Here is my fastest run AA 50.662.
Here is my excuse for being slow. My tires are worn/heat cycled out and they feel greasy.
John KimParticipantThat’s great to hear. Makes me feel better about coaching. I think I only told Cathy two things: 1) Could go faster through the starting left-right-left chicane, and 2) Could get closer to cones in the slaloms. Maybe that’s worth 1 second, right? The rest of her time reduction was self-taught.

When I coached Katherine in the blue Mini, I had very little to offer her.
What ever you did worked. Cathy thought you were quite helpful and her next run was about 2.5s faster.
