I visited an old friend today… the truck and trailer… so I could take an inventory and collect the timing equipment and radios for charging. I have to say… I’m really psyched for next week!
We may have to do it again in February! Pre-Season Test & Tune on 2/23 maybe?
2/23 sounds great!
January 17, 2013 at 7:49 am #1380John KimParticipantLooks like I might be in from the waitlist…. Woot!
January 18, 2013 at 10:53 pm #1390John KimParticipantI’ve invited a friend to come watch and get some rides. He drives a Subie but I did loan him my BMW for a month once and he enjoyed driving it. Hopefully he will make it tomorrow. He’s almost as tall at Matt!
Is the passenger rule that any experienced autocrosser can take passengers until you prove you are not a responsible driver, or nobody can take a passenger until an instructor agrees that you are responsible? Down in LA and San Diego, they have formal instructor assignments and only instructors could take passengers (or be passengers for non-instructors). But the last time I ran GGC AutoX, I thought it was more flexible on passengers.
Also do you need me to buddy with a new driver or do you already have enough buddies?
January 18, 2013 at 11:00 pm #1391Jeff RobertsParticipantThat’s fine John… just make sure your bud signs in when he arrives and we’ll sort it out at the event.
We have lots of trained coaches available for novice and first timers. They decide when someone can go solo or take a passenger. Those required to have a coach will have “COACH REQUESTED” on their run sticker so they can be found.
We’re good on buddies, but I’ll add you to my list of volunteers for next time.
See you tomorrow!
Doubtful.
January 19, 2013 at 12:06 am #1394John KimParticipantAren’t you 6’7″? He’s 6’4″ and worried my extra helmet won’t fit him. He has a large head, but then again so do I!
January 20, 2013 at 6:26 am #1396James KeaneParticipantWanted to thank everyone for a great event! I had an absolute blast. This event was a solid way to shake off the winter rust and catch up with everyone. In fact, I had so much winter rust built up my car swallowed cones on my first two runs.
Again, great idea Jeff and team, and a wonderful addition to the calendar.
Cheers,
JamesJanuary 20, 2013 at 9:42 am #1397John KimParticipantSecond that. Great event. Had a blast. Thought I was going pretty fast with my best lap at 53.002 after some good coaching from Tony, but then I saw others running 50’s and 51’s. (I’ll ignore the 47’s and 48’s from the race prepped silver E36, the blue E36 driven by an alien, and the gray E46 M3 with the 265mm Star Specs.) I still have lots and lots of room for improvement! Took a new autocrosser for 3 runs as a passenger and got one passenger ride from my AutoX buddy.
Ride in the Saab Viggen turbo:
My fastest lap of the day, with Dave (new autocrosser from Marin) as a passenger:
January 20, 2013 at 11:12 pm #1403Jack YuModeratorGreat idea and THANKS Jeff for all the extra work for pulling this together, not to mention you got sick the day before. The day could not have run any smoother. All the improvements to the system are paying off.
Matt is over 7 feet tall…no one has or will come close any time soon, unless Shaq or Yao Ming decide they want to try autocrossing!
I was pretty impressed with the red Scion FR-S Dez was driving..he was also in the 48’s I believe!
January 21, 2013 at 4:38 am #1406MarcParticipantThanks Jeff for making this off season event happen! It was way too much fun. Hope you feel better soon!
January 21, 2013 at 7:17 am #1407Charlie DavisParticipantI took 0.7 off on my last run by taking tighter lines and just getting closer to apex cones.
January 21, 2013 at 9:39 am #1409Dave DunwoodieParticipantI was able to take almost 1.5 seconds off my time from last October, the big change is the rebuilt LSD.
Last year:

This weekend, 47.567 seconds:

I did a 52.4 in Oct, and managed a 50.3 yesterday (with absolutely no change to the car between the two–still running on 5 1/2 cylinders both times). Some of the difference was definitely from already having a bit a familiarity with the course. I think that taking that Evo School Phase II back in December helped too.
Anyway, times aside, the event yesterday was a ton of fun. Thanks to everyone for helping to make it a success!
January 22, 2013 at 7:28 am #1413Troy YoshinagaParticipantI would like to thank Matt V. and Jeff R. for making us feel so welcome on Saturday! It was great to have your coaching and input on how to drive the course. And showing us the ropes and introducing us around to the other members. It really help out a bunch. We had such a great time and are looking forward to the next time!!! Everyone was so friendly we felt like we had been members for a long time even though it was our first time there.
Thanks again
